The Chihuahua is one of the toy dogs that many dog owners adore. He has extreme devotion and loyalty to his owner. However, he is rather reserved around people unknown to him and may show quite some aggression when around other dogs. Despite this, he gets along very well with other home pets.
Whereas some Chihuahuas are quite brave and behave as if they have the ability to take on the world, others are very shy as well as timid. Whatever the case, Chihuahua dog breeds are quite protective of their masters and other family members.
Grooming Chihuahua dog breeds
Chihuahuas are fairly active and require daily exercises. However, they can make do with running around inside the house. Despite this, outdoor walks are very important and play time should never be overlooked. Chihuahuas also like roaming outside and exploring.
With regard to living arrangements, Chihuahuas are indoor dogs and should never be kept outdoors. They tend to lose heat very fast and as such do not like cold weather. However, exploring the yard for a few hours a day is something that they should be allowed to do because it makes them very happy.
If you own Chihuahuas, grooming should not be a problem. The short haired Chihuahuas require minimal brushing of their hair. Doing so once a week would be good enough. For the long-haired Chihuahua, you can do the brushing more regularly although doing so twice every week should be enough.
The Health of Chihuahuas
Chihuahuas have long life spans as compared to a number of dog breeds. They can live for up to twenty years with the average age for healthy dogs being 16-17 years. However, veterinary experts suggest that people that own Chihuahuas should take them for regular health tests especially because they are prone to cardiac and knee problems.
On average, dog owners of Chihuahuas do not need to keep worrying about the health of their dogs. Although they may be concerned about minor problems like hypoglycemia, and the pulmonic stenosis, Chihuahuas are not known to have any serious problems with their health.
Also, Chihuahuas may exhibit molera which refers to soft spots at the top of their skulls as a result of incomplete fontanel closures. Overall Chihuahuas are pretty trouble free dogs and if you provided them with proper care you will have a happy, loyal and devoted friend.
